While there’s no “perfect” day to shop second hand stores, many regulars swear by shopping early on Monday and Tuesday. Homeowners tend to drop off garage sale leftovers on Sunday nights, making for new finds. Plus, the weekends are more crowded shopping days, so employees look to restock early in the week.

While holiday weekends tend to be busier shopping times, people also have more time to go through their closets and homes. Spring cleaning that’s been put off can easily get done on the 3-day Memorial Day weekend, which can mean more Goodwill donations later that week.

Thrift store employees put a little extra love into stocking shelves right before a sale day. Ideally, they want shoppers to have a wide range of well-organized goods to browse first thing on discount days. This is especially true on Goodwill’s 50% off days, held every other Saturday. Head over to your favorite Goodwill store the night before to browse, then lineup first thing in the morning to get in. Also on any day, pay attention to the color tag of the day at Goodwill—displayed in the front of the store and regularly announced over the loudspeaker. Any item with that color tag can be purchased for half price!!

Many thrift shops, like Goodwill, offer special discount days for seniors, students, military members, or even teachers. If you or a family member fall into one of these categories, shop smart. Ask your local thrift shop which days you can shop on for less. For example, military members and students can score 25% off on Sundays at Goodwill, while seniors get 25% off on Tuesdays. The tradition of cleaning out your closets in spring is even more widespread in Phoenix, where summer temperatures make it too hot for people to host garage sales. February through April is prime yard sale time here. So, if you’re in the market for clothing or household goods, this is a great time to shop thrift stores.

Amazing things are always happening at Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona! Whether you are looking for a daily special or want to participate in one of our job training events, we have something for you.

When you donate to Goodwill Southern California, you help individuals with barriers to employment in our community secure sustainable employment through education, training, work experience and career placement services. Goodwill supports its mission of Transforming lives through the Power of Work with proceeds generated from the sale of donated goods at more than 80 stores.

So much of our mission is funded through retail sales, which are dependent on the donation of new and gently used items to fill our stores. Donors do their part, and we do ours by offering easy access to centers and friendly donation attendants who help unload items and provide receipts for use in preparing taxes. We accept everything from clothing and accessories to small household appliances and furnishings, computers, books, e-media, fine china, art and other collectibles in good or new condition. Thanks to your generous donations, last year, Goodwill Southern California diverted more than 100 million pounds of reusable or recyclable goods and electronics from landfills. Goodwill is Caring for the Earth and that’s – Good For Everyone.

Goodwill Southern California gratefully accepts donations at more than 80 retail stores and over 40 donation centers where an attendant will happily assist you by unloading your items and providing you with a receipt for your records. We are sorry for any inconvenience; however, we do not offer pick-up service.

It’s the kind of math anyone can love. 1 Bike + 1 Coat + 1 DVD = 1 Hour of Career Training. Ninety-two cents of every dollar you donate (or every dollar we earn from your donation of goods) goes toward preparing and placing someone in sustainable employment. Whether it’s a pair of jeans, an unwanted vehicle or a financial gift, donations help Goodwill provide critical career resources and services to tens-of-thousands of local residents every year.

PLEASE NOTE: The information detailed here applies to acceptable donated goods for Goodwill Southern California only. Locations in Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Orange County are operated independently.

Donated goods, cars and financial gifts fund programs that assist veterans, at risk youth, the homeless, ex-offenders and those with significant disabilities and the greatest barriers to employment. These individuals obtain valuable skills training, and enjoy the rewards of dignified employment, a paycheck and a brighter tomorrow. Thank you for donating!

The cost of disposing certain items takes away from funds we invest in our employment and training programs. We appreciate your donations and your help in keeping unsafe, broken or non-working items out of our stores by not donating items that do not meet current safety standards due to recalls or bans. As a result of the new e-waste recycling law in Pennsylvania, Goodwill has received a high-volume of TVs that we are unable to sell or that we can't recycle. We DO accept computers, monitors, etc. We work with Dell Reconnect in recycling computers. We are working to find a vendor that will help us recycle TVs. Until then, we are sorry that we can't take your TV donation.

Goodwill makes every effort to comply with governmental recall notices regarding consumer products. Goodwill does not independently test for lead or other contaminants in consumer products. All Goodwill merchandise is sold “as-is” with all faults. For recall notices, visit the in-store kiosk or the Consumer Products Safety Commission’s website at www.recalls.gov.

In an effort to make donating clothing to Goodwill more convenient for our donors, we have begun placing Donation Bins at a few of our Store locations and around the community throughout central and southeast Pennsylvania. If you see our bins out in the community you may donate with confidence knowing that your donation to Goodwill helps local community members with barriers to independence.

What are the tax benefits of donating my vehicle?

When you donate your vehicle, you may deduct the fair market value up to $500. If your vehicle sells for more than $500, you may deduct the full selling price. After the vehicle is sold, you will receive a letter stating the actual sale price to be used for tax purposes.

What types of vehicles do you accept?

We accept almost all vehicles including cars, trucks, vans and SUVs. We also take boats, motorcycles, airplanes, RVs and sports vehicles. If you have a different type of vehicle and are unsure if we will take it, just give us a call at 866.492.2770.

Swapping and bartering allow you to obtain items without needing to spend money. Instead, you exchange items or services you don’t need with clothes, gear, furniture or other goods you do need. Set up swaps and barter fairs with friends or neighbors or attend annual organized swaps across the city.
